Although Henry VIII had issued gold crowns the first silver crowns (and half crowns) were minted in the reign of Edward VI in his "fine silver issue" of 1551-53. No crowns or half crowns were minted in the reign of Mary but continued again during the reign of Elizabeth I in 1601 and 1602. A crown had the value of five shillings.
