Early Norman Pennies

William I continued with Saxon system of minting silver pennies from a large number of regional mints. The coinage deteriotated with increasing debasement and worn dies during the reign of William II and Henry I and into the civil war of Stephen and Matilda.

The coinage did not improve again until the reign of Henry II and the introduction of the short cross coinage.
