Provenance

This is the records or documents authenticating an object or the history of its ownership.

Why is it important in coin collecting? Well the history of a coin can greatly influence the value of a coin. The coin provenance gives the new owner confidence in the coin's authenticity as well as its place in coin history.

Many coins have been part of famous collections of come from famous hoards. Also if the coin has been sold by a well known dealer or auction house it gains from the knowledge that the authenicity is like to be sound.

When collecting it is a good thing to always keep old reciepts or coin discs to help build the provenance of that specific coin.
